11 Attendees!

Join us for this Elementary Class. We will go over and recap the basics

Today we had 11 Elementary students and they stayed back in the Intermediate group too.

It was a rainy morning and the beginning of Ramadan. One of our students, had come on a bicycle and got soaked. Luckily someone had some spare trousers around!

Message for students:

What a delightful and polite group of students (cheeky at times and light hearted).

It's really been a pleasure teaching you. Do continue to test each other using the handouts I have provided. Listen to songs and read the lyrics. Do the same with your favourite movies (Watch in English and read subtitles).

I will be preparing and try to put together a Virtual English Cafe online programme over the next few weeks. Do feel free to send me feedback or questions about your English learning.

Thank you Ati, Seerat & Mohd Ali for helping me manage the large groups. Look forward to having Tea & cakes with you again soon!

I will email you all with updates to the website & new events.

Turn it into a game!

We started with some revision of days of the week, numbers 1-20, months of the year. If you got the answer wrong or enthusiastically answered for someone else, you were out of the game!

ESOL Pilot Collaboration Thanks

Thanks, Toby, so much for your support and giving me the opportunity. Thanks to all your staff that helped with setting up, Sohini for materials and printing, with special thanks to Jagruti & Lillias for teaching assistance & catering/hospitality respectively.

The project was an overwhelming success.

11:00 - 12:00 noon: Intermediate: 11 Attendees!

Join us for this Intermediate Class. We will practice and develop your skills towards fluency.

Today's photocopy handouts included; numbers, jobs & Wild World (Gapfill exercise) by Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. Students' would listen to the song twice and fill in the gaps (The missing words were added to the top of the sheet to make it easier for beginners)..

After this, I grabbed the guitar as a surprise... it was behind the entrance door to the classroom so nobody could see it. While I was setting up... Lillias & Jagruti came in and created a spread with Tea & cakes.

My contribution was the chocolates (Malteesers.... my weakness for anybody who wants to win favour with me!).

Classroom Management

This week we were able to use the usual table arrangement with all the tables arranged in a square and everyone being seated around it.

  • 10:00 - 11:00am: Elementary
  • 11:00 - 12noon: Intermediate

I thought this would be the most effective way of separating the levels.

Local Voluntary Work

I've decided to take a break from voluntary teaching during this Ramadan break. It would be a good opportunity to assess my chances of securing a local job in ESOL.

I am currently setting up a CIC (community interest company). This should give me more opportunities to find a permanent position or contracts teaching ESOL via local charities that have funding..

Thanks again to collaborators at  St Paul's Church organised by Refugees Welcome Crawley.. Since then I've started these workshops with Crawley Community Action, attended English Cafe at St Richard's Church as well as a portacabin hub at Caridon Property with Anna-Rosa Harris from Melting Pot Project & Debs from Caridon.

Multicultural Class

"The interactive approach, which you used during these sessions, made the learning experience engaging and memorable. I feel more confident in applying what I've learned to real-world situations. Overall, it was a valuable and enriching experience that I'm grateful for."

Last week I was invited to The Charis Centre to assist in two classes, a beginners class and an intermediate class. I then got invited to collaborate on an ESOL Pilot with Crawley Community Action..

It's an exciting challenge to work in such a multicultural environment! I think my next language will have to be Arabic.
