Week 3: Tuesday Mar 5th

Crawley Community Action

10:00 - 11:00am: Elementary:

30 Attendees!

Join us for this Elementary Class. We will go over and recap the basics

Today we had another 30 Elementary students and 30 in the Intermediate group (many staying on for both sessions).

They were split into 4 groups and chairs arranged in four circles at each corner of the room.

Basics

We started with some revision of days of the week, numbers 1-20, months of the year. We then preceded with a handout with a selection of vocabulary of common objects.

Students practiced & memorised the object. They were then shown how to test each other.

Routines

We also looked at our present simple routine handout, went over some connecting words like; next, later, after that, then, finally.

We did the same with past simple & added exercises and practice with 3rd person - verb + (e)s.

11:00 - 12:00 noon: Intermediate: 30 Attendees!

Join us for this Intermediate Class. We will practice and develop your skills towards fluency.

I was lucky to have some assistance today from Jagruti at CCA. We also took some pictures. Next week is our final workshop. I'm looking forward to introducing scrabble and some board games, as well as a song.

Classroom Management

We created 4 groups & got rid of the tables (great design on the folding tables) by placing them around the edges of the classroom. The 4 groups of students were then put in 4 circular seating arrangements with one intermediate student assigned to manage each group.

  • 10:00 - 11:00am: Elementary
  • 11:00 - 12noon: Intermediate

I thought this would be the most effective way of separating the levels.

Local Voluntary Work

I decided to start looking locally and in the meantime made myself available for any kind of ESOL voluntary work. It would be a good challenge and keep me connected with local needs.

I was invited to observe a class at St Paul's Church organised by Refugees Welcome Crawley.. Since then I've started these workshops with Crawley Community Action, attended English Cafe at St Richard's Church as well as a portacabin hub at Caridon Property with Anna-Rosa Harris from Melting Pot Project & Debs from Caridon.

Multicultural Class

"The interactive approach, which you used during these sessions, made the learning experience engaging and memorable. I feel more confident in applying what I've learned to real-world situations. Overall, it was a valuable and enriching experience that I'm grateful for."

Last week I was invited to The Charis Centre to assist in two classes, a beginners class and an intermediate class. I then got invited to collaborate on an ESOL Pilot with Crawley Community Action..

It's an exciting challenge to work in such a multicultural environment! I think my next language will have to be Arabic.
